999 Uses For Magnetic Tape (1947)

The US Army-Distributed Publication That Helped Inspire The Founding Of Sony

The video clip above, from the 1990 BBC documentary Design Classics: The Sony Walkman, mentions a pamphlet distributed across Japan by the US Army during reconstruction efforts following the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States.

The pamphlet, Elements of Magnetic Recording — And 999 Applications, was written in 1947 by A.C. Shaney, the Chief Engineer of Amplifier Corporation of America a Westbury, New York, a rising star in the manufacture of amplification equipment which would go on to be purchased by Gulf and Western’s Unicord in 1964 and began manufacturing amplifiers and musical instruments under the brand name Univox. Sony cofounder Akio Morita cites Elements of Magnetic Recording as one of the inspirations that led him to start the company.

A modest 32 pages, the pamphlet offers an extremely brief eight chapter overview of the magnetic recording process, introduces types of equipment, and, in its final thirteen pages, presents a list of 999 potential uses for magnetic tape. The list, at first glance extensive and potentially authoritative, ranges from the utterly logical to the bizarre, revealing much about the mindset and values of its author, A.C. Shaney.

The title page of Elements of Magnetic Recording — And 999 Applications from the Museum of Portable Sound Research Library’s digital collections.

A handful of concepts are repeated in multiple contexts; for example, there is a preoccupation with “famous people’s voices”, which the author seems to think multiple occupations are in need of archiving. Shaney, like most American businessmen of the time, seems to think of himself as an expert in all things, and large portions of his list veer from mansplaining, to misogyny, to outright fallacy – such as his assertion that a beauty salon is in need of a tape recorded archive of “Narrated Local Gossip”. While there is an exhaustive entry for uses of magnetic tape in “Education”, there are only two specific types of schools with their own entries: Dancing and Fashion. Somehow, “Bacteriologists” also make the list. One can’t help wondering how much of the list is a result of bursts of productivity following a three martini lunch.

A digital scan of the entire pamphlet is now held in our Research Library. Republished below is the alphabetised list of 999 uses for magnetic tape in its entirety, in the hopes it might go on to inspire the Akio Moritas of our own time.

Chapter Nine
New Horizons — 999 Applications

Excerpted from Shaney, A.C. (1947) Elements of Magnetic Recording — and 999 Applications. New York City: Amplifier Corporation of America.

The following compilation of 999 applications is primarily intended only to hint at the many uses to which magnetic tape recording may be applied. No claim is made for completeness. In fact, individuals engaged in the indicated classifications can undoubtedly make substantial contributions. It is felt that over 100,000 practical applications could easily be compiled by a serious minded investigator. The scientist, engineer, technician and experimenter should remember that Magnetape recording can be applied to any phenomenon that can be converted into a varying voltage, current, resistance, pressure, opacity, humidity, viscosity, temperature, transparency, impedance, torque, or speed, as these in turn can easily be converted into a varying sonic frequency which can in turn be recorded on Magnetape.

In order to avoid excessive repetition, the term “recorded” has been omitted from some of the listings.
