Portsmouth, London, or…?

Although we’re currently based in Portsmouth, UK, our museum began in London, and we still conduct in-person visits there too. It’s easiest for us to meet with you in Portsmouth, but our Director is also available for London visits.

Depending on your budget, we’ve also travelled to other cities or countries to conduct in-person visits. Since it’s portable, we can bring the museum just about anywhere!

Private and Group Visits

When you visit alone, you can get lost in your own world of listening, or you can chat with the Director – it’s up to you. We are totally fine with leaving you alone if you prefer!

Visit alone for a one-to-one conversation with our Director and Chief Curator, or bring a friend. Or bring a group of friends! Because our museum is portable, we’re able to conduct visits just about anywhere. We’ve met up in cafés, other museums, restaurants, theatres, and even in people’s homes!

As each visit is tailored for each visitor or group, we’ll need to chat with you to arrange details first. Please use our Contact Form to book your visit.

Depending on the size of your group, you might need a Free Roaming tour (above left), or a Guided Tour including a visual slideshow and a pre-selected assortment of sounds (like we did at the V&A, above right). We’ll help you pick out what’s best for you.

Free Roaming or Guided Tours

Some people, like this nearly 100 year-old visitor, need extra assistance. We’re more than happy to provide the care needed to make your visit as comfortable as possible – just let us know how we can help.

Depending on the size of your group, we can sit together at a table, everyone brings their own (wired) headphones, and you take turns passing around the museum’s mobile and Gallery Guide book, choosing your own path through our sound collection.

Or, if you’ve got a large group (more than 10-15 people), it may be easier to conduct your visit as a presentation – a visual slide show with a pre-selected group of sounds to listen to.

Your Experience, Your Way

Visits can last anywhere from an hour to half a day or more – with hundreds of sounds to listen to and stories to share, your visit can be as in-depth as you have time for. We can even bring along some things from our Physical Objects Collection for you to handle and inspect up-close.

And you won’t get tired from being on your feet all day like at other museums!

Pricing

In person visits in Portsmouth cost £25 per adult, £10 per student or accompanied minor.

London visits require extra travel fees; contact us for details.

PLEASE NOTE: London visits require additional travel fees. In person visitors must provide their own wired headphones, though some accommodations may be made depending on group size. When hiring a Guided Group Tour Presentation, facilities including a video projector and sound system are required, and are not provided by the Museum of Portable Sound. Final pricing is determined based on location and any Museum of Portable Sound Staff travel requirements. Please contact us if you have further questions.
